Rugby in Indonesia

Rugby in Indonesia is an emerging sport. There are about 600 professional rugby players in the country [1] , the rugby union is led by the Indonesian Rugby Union , a member of Asia Rugby and World Rugby .

History

Rugby came to Indonesia during the Dutch colonization [2] . In 1983, there were only four clubs in the country: the International Sports Club of Jakarta (composed of entrepreneurs), a club from the island of Kalimantan (players of French origin), a club from Bandung (the field was on a hill, one credit zone was about 4 higher than the other , 5 m) and a team based on one of the ships of the US Navy and conducting home games there [3] . Rugby fields of Indonesia were sometimes in strange locations: one in the thicket of the jungle, the other on the top of the mountain, the third in the middle of the tea plantation [4] .

Indonesia's rugby 7 team participated in the 1986 Hong Kong series, but after that rugby fell into decay and was revived only in 2004, not without the efforts of Australians, New Zealanders and Welsh, who were assisted by volunteers from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore [2] . The game, originally popular among representatives of the countries of the British Commonwealth, became more popular among the local population [5] . Nowadays, the center of Indonesian rugby is the capital of the country, Jakarta [5] , where most teams in various sports are based [5] . Among the prominent rugby teams of Jakarta, the clubs Jakarta Komodos stand out "And" Jakarta Bunteng " [6] . Rugby is included in the curriculum of some schools [2] .

Indonesia today has its own classic rugby team and rugby 7 team , which are little known outside the country. The Indonesian rugby 15 team plays in Division 3 “East” of Rugby Asia and is largely composed of foreigners (mainly Australians), either with Indonesian roots or who have obtained Indonesian citizenship after a long stay in the country. The team was once coached by Australian Duncan Hall, Jr. . The rugby-7 team participated in the 2018 Asian Games Rugby-7 tournament in Jakarta , losing all three matches in the group stage and taking 11th place in the consolation tournament. The women's team at the same Asian Games in 2018 held four matches (three in the group and one in the playoffs), losing all matches and scoring only 12 points for all 4 meetings.
