Biography

Born August 30, 1952 in the city of Weimar, GDR.

In 1975 - graduated with honors from the medical faculty of the Saratov Medical Institute .

In 1979 - defended his thesis

In 1992 he defended his doctoral dissertation.

In 2001 he was awarded the academic title of professor in the specialty “microbiology”.

All further labor and scientific activities are related to the All-Union (now Russian) research anti-plague institute "Microbe" ( Russian NPI "Microbe" of the Rospotrebnadzor ), where he went from a graduate student to the head of the laboratory of molecular microbiology, from 1997 to the present - director of the institute .

In 2005 - elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

In 2011 - elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

In 2013, he became an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (as part of the accession of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences to the Russian Academy of Sciences ).

Scientific Activities

Geneticist and epidemiologist, specialist in the microbiology of pathogens of especially dangerous infectious diseases.

The main directions of scientific activity: the study of the molecular-genetic organization of genes encoding the synthesis of pathogenicity factors; the study of the molecular basis of the interaction of pathogenic bacteria with the host and carrier; creation of modern means and methods of diagnostics and prophylaxis based on the achievements of molecular microbiology.

The creator of the new direction in the study of pathogenic microorganisms, which examines the pathogenicity factors of microorganisms on the model of pathogens of plague, cholera, anthrax and other especially dangerous infections.

For the first time, he put forward a statement about the possibility of genetic modeling of the pathogenicity of the plague pathogen and experimentally confirmed the role of plasmid and chromosomal genes in the development of an acute infectious process. He substantiated the hypothesis about the role of the biofilm of the plague microbe in plague enzootic. He established the ability of the plague microbe to form biofilms, which provide the possibility of its long-term existence and reproduction in the soil of rodents' nests, which makes it possible to explain the mechanisms of the natural foci of bacterial infections at the molecular level and is therefore universal.

He made a significant contribution to the formation of a three-level system of molecular monitoring of pathogens of dangerous infections, aimed at improving the epidemiological surveillance of "emerging" and "returning" infectious diseases.

Participant in the development of a number of targeted integrated programs, including the Federal Program for Scientific and Technical Program “Creating Methods and Means for Protecting the Population and the Environment from Hazardous and Especially Dangerous Pathogens in Natural and Man-Made Emergency Situations of 1999–2005”; The Federation (2009-2013). ” He was engaged in the development and scientific substantiation of the modernization of the specialized anti-epidemic brigades of Rospotrebnadzor (SPEB). A mobile complex of SPEB laboratories has been developed and created on the basis of an auto chassis, which allows performing in autonomous conditions the whole range of studies necessary to assess the epidemiological and sanitary situation in an emergency zone.

The developer of the modern tactics of applying SPEB in emergency response. Provides scientific support for the development and production of certified medical immunobiological preparations for the diagnosis and prevention of especially dangerous infections, mastered the production of a number of drugs and PCR test systems previously produced abroad, created Russia's only large-scale technological line for the production of rabies immunoglobulin for emergency prevention of rabies.

Under his leadership, defended 12 doctoral and 11 master's theses.

He is the author of over 520 scientific publications, including 10 monographs, 2 books, 10 manuals, a coauthor of more than 40 patents for inventions, 3 databases and 3 computer programs, a number of sanitary rules and methodological documents of the federal level.
