History and Description

Villa Schulenburg was founded in the city of Hera in 1913: it was designed by the architect Henri van de Velde as a residence for the family of the local businessman Paul Schulenburg (1871-1937), who owned a number of textile industries . Upon completion of construction in 1915, the garden of the villa was expanded in 1919-1920 according to the project of the student of van de Velde - Tilo Shoder. After the death of Schulenburg, the vast park was divided into several sections: at the beginning of the 21st century only a small part of it was preserved. In the garden is still the original Kauerndes Mädchen statue of Richard Engelmann, a copy of which is located in the courtyard of the old university building in Freiburg im Breisgau .

After the expropriation of Villa Schulenburg - which took place after World War II , in 1946 - it has housed the city medical school since 1951. In addition to the construction of a three-story apartment building for students in the western part of the garden, the creation of classrooms and medical rooms in the mansion itself made significant changes to the interior and spatial structure of the building. As of the end of 1996, the former Schulenburg villa was privately owned: since 1997, the owners have carried out a comprehensive reconstruction and restoration of both the main house and outbuildings, the gatehouse and the garden. Today, the entire ensemble of buildings is used as the museum of Henri van de Velde and is the headquarters of the European Society of Van de Velde. The restored historical atmosphere of the old building allows holding weddings, concerts, exhibitions and lectures in it [2] . The student dormitory was demolished to expand the park. For the successful completion of a complex restoration that returned the building to its original design, its owners received the Thuringian Heritage Award for 2012 [3] .
