Sugao Yamanouchi ( 山 内 清 男 Yamanouchi Sugao , January 2, 1902 , Tokyo , Japan - August 29, 1970 ) is a Japanese archaeologist. Recently, he was a professor at University in Tokyo. One of the leading researchers of the Jomon Period . Using the method of stratigraphy, he developed a detailed typology of “rope ceramics” and a complete relative chronology of the Jomon period. He also determined how patterns were applied to Jomon ceramics using plant fibers.

Biography
He was born on January 2, 1902 in the Tokyo historical district of Shitai ( п 谷 区 Shitaya-ku ) , which was located in the western part of the current special district of Taito .
