The first ever ekiden world championship (relay race on the highway) was held on May 9 and 10, 1992 on the Portuguese island of Madeira in the city of Funchal . 138 athletes from 16 countries of the world took part in the competition as a part of teams. Two sets of medals were won (among men and women).

A harbinger of the tournament's appearance on the international calendar was the IAEF World Challenge , held by the IAAF in 1986 in Japanese Hiroshima . However, only six years later, relay race competitions at the marathon distance received their own world championship.
Each team consisted of 6 participants, who alternately overcome the stages, totaling 42 km 195 m (length of the classic marathon ): 5 km, 10 km, 5 km, 10 km, 5 km, 7.195 km. Instead of a baton, a wrist band was used. In total, 15 men's and 8 women's teams went to the start.

Competition Results
The first draw of the tournament ended with two confident victories. On the first day, women competed in the race. The hosts of the championship from Portugal came forward after the second stage, after which they only increased their advantage. At the finish line, their separation from silver medalists from Denmark was more than four minutes.
In men, runners from Kenya have confirmed the status of favorites. They were the fastest in five stages out of six, due to which they were ahead of the Portuguese national team by one and a half minutes and set a new world record - 2: 02.02.
