Born in Mexico. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Mexico City . In 1788-1803 participated in the botanical expedition to New Spain , led by Martin de Sesse y Lacaste (1751-1808). Most of the expedition arrived from Spain. Echeverria was one of the few who were born in Mexico. During the expedition, he made sketches of plants that were collected by the members of the expedition. He was certified as the best of naturalist artists.

In 1791 he participated in an expedition to California led by José Mariano Mosinho (1763–1819, which lasted two years. On this expedition, Echeverria made images of 200 species of plants and some animals. At the end of this journey, Echeverria went on a new expedition with Mosinho, this times to southern Mexico. In 1794 the expedition was divided into two parts. Echeveria went to the Caribbean islands with Martin de Sesse and the botanist Jaime Senseve . However, upon arrival in Havana , Atanasio Echeverria and Senseve became ill with dysentery As a result of this, the botanical research almost ceased during the first year.

In 1797, Atanasio Echeverria joined the Guantanamo Commission. It was a military expedition involved in mapping the Guantanamo Bay , as well as scientific observations. In this expedition, Echeverria painted captured birds and fish. In total, about 3,700 samples were collected, including 27 new species and 5 new genera of animals and plants.

In 1803, Echeverria, together with the expedition, left for Madrid, from where a year later he returned to Mexico, where he was appointed second director of the art department of the Royal Academy of San Carlos .

Atanasio Echeverria worked for 17 years in the field of botanical illustration . [2] . His work in technical and artistic terms compares favorably with the work of his contemporaries. Most of them have survived: 86 sheets with drawings of fish and birds were deposited in the Maritime Center of Barcelona , the main part - in the American Hunt Institute , which deals with the history of botany in North America.

In honor of Atanasio Echeverria, Alphonse Decandol in 1828 named the genus of North American succulent plants Echeveria . [3]
