A week later, Kristiansen won another gold medal of the world championship, this time a cross , held in neighboring New Zealand [1] .
Following Kristiansen in Adelaide, Chinese woman Van Syutin finished : athletes from the Middle Kingdom in 1988 made significant progress, taking second and fourth places in the individual championship and becoming silver medalists in the team. Zoya Ivanova from the USSR supplemented the individual pedestal.
Each country could put up to four athletes. The strongest teams in the team championship were determined by the sum of the places of the three best participants. For the second time in history, gold medals went to runners from the Soviet Union.
