A circular track was laid along the Tagus River embankment from the Torri di Belen Tower to the ferry pier. About 30 thousand people watched the course of the struggle at a distance [1] .
The third time out of four possible world champions was Aurora Cunha , speaking to her native audience. Like two years ago , another runner from Portugal won the silver medal - Rosa Mota . Closed the top three winners Karl Börskens from the Netherlands. Kunya’s third victory was the most difficult: the difference between the first and fourth places at the finish was only 10 seconds [2] .
Each country could put up to four athletes. The strongest teams in the team championship were determined by the sum of the places of the three best participants.
