History

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were football teams in Izmir organized only by Greeks, Armenians, and the British. The strongest of which was the " Panionios " [1] . Muslim Turks were forbidden to play football until 1908, when the Young Turks revolution took place and the constitution of 1876 was restored, which enabled the Turks to create their own sports clubs. On November 1, 1912, the first Turkish sports club “Karshiyaka” was founded in Izmir, named after the city district of the same name. Club colors were chosen red, symbolizing Turkey, and green, the color of Islam. Two years later, the second Turkish club Altai appeared in Izmir [2] .

In 1925 and 1926, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , visiting Izmir, was in the club. During one of these visits, Atatürk permitted the “Karsiyaka” to include a crescent moon with a star in its emblem [3] . In 1926, the club first became the winner of the Izmir Football League . “Karshiyak” was able to repeat this success only in the 1950s (in 1952 and 1959). In 1959, she along with three other Izmir teams took part in the first National League draw . In the 1961/1962 season, “Karshiyaka” became the fifth in the Turkish championship, losing ground to only the big Istanbul three and fellow countrymen from “Altai”. Two years later, she flew out of the main Turkish league. In 1970, “Karshiyaka” achieved a return to the National League, but following the results of the 1971/72 championship it took the last place and dropped back to the Second League.

The next coming of Karshiyaki to the Turkish football elite came in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The club played the role of a middle peasant or an outsider of the First League, twice flying out and returning. According to the results of the 1995/96 season, “Karshiyaka” took the last place in the league and did not return there more (as of 2018). Subsequently, the team played in the Second League, which became the formation of the Super League of the First, until 2016 (with a break in 2001-2003). In 2016, Karshiyaka flew to the Second League, and two years later to the Third.

Opponents

The most irreconcilable rival of Karshiyaki is Goztepe from Izmir. On May 16, 1981, the match between them gathered an audience of 80,000 spectators at the stadium. The game was part of the Turkish Second League and was included in the Guinness Book of Records as a match with record attendance for the second leagues [4] . The role of another principal rival for Karshiyaki is played by Altai , the second Turkish club in Izmir after it was founded.
