Sports career
Working at the factory of the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Moto Guzzi, in Mandello del Lario, he became a member of the Canottieri Moto Guzzi rowing team. He trained under the leadership of Angelo Alippi. In 1943, he won the junior championship in Northern Italy, and in 1945 - the main championship.
Together with the partners in the fourth swing without a helmsman, he vividly declared himself already at the first international competition - the European Rowing Championship in Swiss Lucerne (1947), where little-known athletes unexpectedly won the gold medal. He was the sevenfold champion of Italy.
At the Summer Olympics in London (1948) in the national team won the gold medal. Italians dominated this discipline until 1952, regularly winning races in which they took part. They won the European Championships in Amsterdam (1949) and Milan (1950). However, at the Summer Games in Helsinki (1952), they completed performances at the semifinal stage.
