Freeman, Derek

Derek Freeman (August 15, 1916, Wellington - July 6, 2001, Canberra) [3] is a New Zealand anthropologist . In 1983, he published the book Margaret Mead and Samoa : Building and Debunking the Anthropological Myth (Freeman, 1983), which criticized Margaret Mead's canonical and sensational (at one time) research on sexuality in Samoa’s traditional society and cited in her work 1928 "Coming of Age in Samoa." Freeman refutes many of Mead’s claims, but his criticism has also been criticized, as it has created schism and discussion in the scientific community.
