Story
1941 There is a Great Patriotic War, the Germans are rapidly advancing. Lieutenant Ivan Gorchakov, after graduating from a military school directed to the front, did not manage to make war, loses all his comrades and is completely alone and without arms in a forest surrounded by Germans. After wandering a few days through the woods, he falls unconscious, and then wakes up from the fact that someone pours water from his flask into his mouth. When he awoke, he meets his rescuers, Captain Rumyantsev and Sergeant Koch, and learns that he is in the German rear. Together they meet and stop a village peasant carrying hay from a village in the direction of the forest. It turns out that he rescues the two surviving soldiers, trying to take them from the village occupied by the Germans into a forest in a cart, hiding under hay. The men saved by the Red Army join the group. Five of the survivors set off, hoping to break through to their own, for which they need to get to the front line, located 30 kilometers from them. Suddenly they stumble upon a strange object: a detached stone abandoned house, to which the Germans drove the captured Russian soldiers. The prisoners set up pillars and stretched barbed wire between them, and an observation tower with a searchlight and a machine gun at the top was already standing next to the house.
The captain comes to the conclusion that this is an artillery base, and tells everyone that it is necessary, before leaving to his, to try to commit sabotage and undermine it. At night, Rumyantsev and Koch with a shovel make a dig under the barbed wire fence, and are going to crawl under it, but suddenly two Germans appear from the forest, carrying firewood. The Germans discover saboteurs, a firefight begins, during which Koch and Rumyantsev manage to kill several Germans, but they kill Koch and Rumyantsev are seriously injured. One of the soldiers, trying to cover his own, enters the battle and shoots a rifle at the machine gunner on the tower; he manages to divert the machine gunner, Rumyantsev and Gorchakov manage to escape from the lighted space, but he himself dies in a shootout. Having left far and making sure that there is no chase after them, the three survivors sit down to rest. Rumyantsev dies from blood loss. Having hidden his body, the officer and the soldiers go to look for their own.
Having reached his, Gorchakov tells the colonel about the German base and tries to convince her that she should immediately try to destroy. The colonel said that he would first check the information received, just like Gorchakov himself, who was surrounded, and even then only after he wrote an explanatory note. The colonel identifies the lieutenant to stay in the hut, which is occupied by the clerk Pula. The bullet helps Ivan correctly write an explanatory note and he takes it to the colonel, but also having received an explanatory letter, he is not in a hurry to act. Suddenly, a general who arrived with a check-in entered, listens to Gorchakov, and orders immediately, without any check, to give him a group, a weapon, explosives and begin to prepare the operation.
