External structureSmall and medium sized flies. The eyes are bare. There are three simple eyes on the crown. The antennae are short. The third segment is pointed, divided into 7 or 8 secondary segments. Palps very short. The second segment of palps is rounded with a fossa at the apex. The proboscis is short. Hind tibia at apex with two spurs. Subcostal vein without setae. The ninth abdominal tergite is longitudinally divided ( Adersia ), or in Scepsis females, it is undivided triangular [1] .
SystematicsThe subfamily was set up by Joseph Beckworth in 1930 and is intermediate between the subfamilies Chrysopsinae and Pangoniinae . With the first subfamily, the presence of simple ocelli on the crown is related, and with the second, the structure of the antennae and mandibular palps is related. The subfamily Scepsidinae includes three genera and eight species [1] [2] [3] :
- Scepsis Walker , 1850
- Scepsis appendiculata ( Macquart , 1840)
- Adersia Austen , 1912
- Adersia ambigua Oldroyd, 1957
- Adersia callani Oldroyd, 1957
- Adersia gandarai Travassos Dias, 1959
- Adersia guichardi Oldroyd, 1957
- Adersia maculenta (Travassos Dias, 1956)
- Adersia oestroides (Karsch, 1888)
- Braunsiomyia Bequaert , 1924
- Braunsiomyia cinerea (Surcouf, 1921)
