Biography

Nikolai Nikolaevich Sazhin was born in 1868 in Arzamas in the family of a photographer, Nikolai Nikolaevich Sazhin, a former serf artist Count A. S. Uvarov, and Evgenia Fedorovna Sakharova. In 1870, the Sazhins family opened the first photographic pavilion in Arzamas [1] . Nicholas received the initial lessons of photo-making from his father.

In 1886, after the death of the head of the family, the Arzamas photo studio passed into the care of Nicholas. In 1887, leaving the shop under the supervision of his brother Anatoly and mother, he moved to Nizhny Novgorod. There he studied with famous photographers Andrei Osipovich Karelin and Maxim Petrovich Dmitriev .

During a short stay in Nizhny Novgorod, Sazhin met his future wife Vera Ternovskaya, with whom he moved first to Arzamas and then to Murom.

In Murom, Nikolai bought a house on Ivanovskaya Street, where in 1892 he opened his own photo studio, and a little later, his branch in Orekhovo-Zuevo, which specialized in printing large-size photographs. Following the example of his father, Nikolai created a series of scenery in his workshop [2] .

With the mass distribution of phototypic (photographic) postcards in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, Nikolai Nikolaevich became its first publisher in Murom, having released several episodes at once. One of the very first specific photographs of the city of Murom - a view of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, was made by Sazhin in 1893.

In 1898, at the St. Petersburg Photographic Exhibition, he was awarded the prize for artistic performance.

Sazhin shot the streets of the city and surroundings of Murom, but he was especially good at photographs. Many of them were preserved in the families of the indigenous inhabitants of the city [3] .

For the photo composition “Lovers at Wattle” Nikolai received the first prize at an exhibition in Paris.

In 1918, Sazhin’s salon was renamed the Red Artisan artel, where Nikolay became the manager.

In 1928, all the property of the photographer was taken in favor of the state. Nikolai left Murom and settled in the village of Dedovo. After the war, he moved to live in Moscow with one of his daughters.

He died on November 25, 1950 at the age of 82 years [4] . He was buried at the Miussky cemetery in Moscow.

Nikolai Sazhin had eight children. He transferred his skills to his youngest son Igor, who became a professional photographer [5] .

Currently, Sazhin's works are kept in the Murom Museum of History and Art [6] .
