Biography

Alexey Veretenchenko was born on October 25, 1918 in the village of White Well of Volchansky district, Kharkov province.

In 1925, parents moved to Kharkov . Here he received secondary education, graduated from the Kharkov Pedagogical Institute, worked at the regional radio, began to print. In 1939 he was admitted to the Union of Writers of Ukraine.

During the Great Patriotic War he was surrounded, was in captivity. He managed to escape, arrived in Lviv , found a job in the Ukrainian Publishing House of the UCC Vladimir Kubiyovich . In 1944 he emigrated to Germany , was in camps. In 1949 he emigrated to the United States , settled in Detroit . He was one of the founders of SUE Slovo. He worked at the General Motors factory until his retirement. He died on March 15, 1993 in Detroit, Michigan , where he was buried.

Creativity

Veretenchenko’s literary work began in Ukraine in 1941 , when the collection of his lyrics “The First Thunder”, a member of the SUE Slovo, was released. During the 2nd World War, he collaborated with the German occupation press (Lviv News), wrote propaganda poems, sometimes of anti-Semitic content.

The author of poetry collections “The First Thunder” (1941), “The Black Nest” (1943), “The Smoke of Eternity” (1951), “Overseas Wines” (1974), and the poem “Black Valley” (1953), translated Byron’s poem “ Mazepa ” (1959).
