The Latin city of Assisium is the birthplace of the Roman poet Propertius and the birthplace of the Catholic Saint Francis of Assisi , who built the first monastery of his order here . This monastery has since been considered first-class among other monasteries of the Franciscan order and bears the name of Sacro-Convento . For a long time it was in the possession of minorities , now it is used as a theological seminary and university.
The monastery complex of St. Francis is a World Heritage site . The basilica (built since 1228) includes the one-nave Lower Church (frescoes by Simone Martini , Pietro Lorenzetti , Cimabue and artists of the Giotto school), crypt (1318; the body of St. Francis rests in cancer ), the cloister of Siskst (XIV-XV centuries) , cloister of the Dead (15th century), the Campanile and the one-nave Upper Church (frescoes of Cimabue, Giotto circle). The basilica was hit hard by the 1997 earthquake.
Richly decorated, with domes, the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (3 km from the city) is a work of Vignola ( 1569 ). In 1832, a significant part of the church collapsed during the earthquake , but was restored to its original form. Many pilgrims gather here in early August to bow to Porziuncola, the cradle of the Franciscan Order. The church of Santa Chiara was erected in 1257 - 1265 at the grave of St. Clara of Assisi . The Romanesque Cathedral of San Rufino , built in the city center around 1140, somewhat loses to these crowded temples.
From Roman antiquities in Assisi, a magnificent portico of the temple of Minerva , as well as ruins, and the remains of the aqueduct , and Etruscan city walls, have been preserved. Medieval fortifications date back to the 14th century .
