Creation History
In 1836, at one of the exhibitions in St. Petersburg, the young artist Aivazovsky met with the master of the pen, Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin . Aivazovsky always admired the poet’s work, highly appreciated his talent, and after a personal meeting, Pushkin became a source of inspiration for the artist. In 1880, Aivazovsky even created a series of works devoted to Pushkin [1] .
Aivazovsky painted the picture “Pushkin on the seashore” in the year of the fiftieth anniversary of the poet’s death, as well as another, more famous picture with the image of the poet - “Farewell to Pushkin to the Sea”, which Aivazovsky painted with Repin . (Repin worked on the figure of the poet, and Aivazovsky - on the landscape) [2] .
Both paintings also refer us to Pushkin 's poem "To the Sea."
The history of the painting after writing
The author presented the painting to the Museum of the Academy of Arts, which, in turn, handed it over to the V.V. Vereshchagin Nikolaev Art Museum , where it is located. The work was badly damaged during the Great Patriotic War , it was found in a terrible state by the artist P.P. Stepanenko and in 1946 it was restored by the restorer Nevryty. The painting was finally restored in 2003 by N. F. Titov [3] .
