Ernest d'Hervilli ( fr. Ernest d'Hervilly , Batignolles (now within the city of Paris) May 26, 1839 - Champigny-sur-Marne , November 18, 1911 ) - French journalist, writer, poet and playwright. The Russian mass reader is best known as the author of the book “The Adventures of a Prehistoric Boy,” whose Russian translations have survived many reprints since the end of the 19th century. and to this day.

Biography
He began his career as a draftsman at Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord (Northern Railway Company), then, until 1865, he was an official in the management of bridges and roads and took part in the reconstruction of Paris under Ottoman . His literary debut took place in 1861 at Le Figaro. He collaborated with Diogène, Les Écoles de France, La Vie parisienne, Le Grand journal, Le Nain jaune, La Lune, Les Nouvelles, L'Artiste, Paris-Caprice, L'Image, La Revue des lettres et des arts, Le Masque , La Nouvelle Némésis, L'Eclipse, La Parodie and other publications. Many of them were published by the republican opposition and the empire often shut them down for more or less veiled satire or political criticism. In this regard, d'Herville hid under the pseudonyms ("Man-in-Big-Shoes", "Blue-White-Red", "Cousin Jacques" or under the collective pseudonym "Gilles Blas").
In 1868, he published his first collection of poems La Lanterne en vers de couleurs (The Lantern in Colored Poems, with a hint of the national newspaper La Lanterne, published by Henri Rochefort ). According to the style of d'Erville, it adjoined the Parnassus group . Many of his texts appeared in the second (1871) and third (1876) volumes of Modern Parnassus and in the collection Sonnets et eaux-fortes. Around 1869, D'Hervilla joined the literary and art circle "Mean Boys" (Vilains Bonshommes). Together with other members of the circle, he appears in the picture of Henri Fantin-Latour's “Table Corner” along with Paul Verlaine , Arthur Rimbaud , Camille Peltan and others
In 1870 he met with Victor Hugo and became a frequent guest of his family. This explains his invitation to the newspaper Le Rappel , in which for ten years he led a column under the pseudonym Passer-by. In subsequent years, he continued to publish chronicles and poems in La Renaissance artistique et littéraire, La République des lettres, La Lune rousse, La Jeune France and other publications.
In addition to newspaper and magazine notes and poetry, over the years he began to write more and more novels, paintings from Parisian life, stories and tales, more and more often addressed to young readers. He also wrote for the theater, specializing in short one-act plays.
At the turn of the century, with the decline in popularity, d'Hervilli stopped publishing and retired to his house in Champigny-sur-Marne, where he died in 1911.
Russian translations
“The Adventures of a Prehistoric Boy” (Aventures d'un petit garçon préhistorique en France, 1888) - the only of the works of D'Erville, translated into Russian. The first translation, published at the end of the 19th century, belongs to the translator and bibliographer Augusta Vladimirovna Meziere . The translation by A.V. Mezieres was published in seven editions during the life of the author and at least twice later. Beginning in the second half of the 20th century, the translation of Boris Mikhailovich Engelhardt , which was repeatedly reprinted with the introduction of an anthropologist, Australian aboriginal specialist Vladimir Rafailovich Kabo and illustrations by Eleanor Maximilianovna Kondiain (1899-1986), gained the greatest popularity. Illustrations for a number of publications were prepared jointly by Mikhail Dmitrievich Ezuchevsky and Vasily Alekseevich Vatagin , illustrations by Tatyana Nikolaevna Glebova (for the 1941 edition) and Vladimir Iosifovich Ruzjo (for the Smolensk edition of 1955) are known. Based on the “Adventures” a play was written and a filmstrip was shot.
