Causerne (cemetery)

Tomb of Hovhannes Cosern (1930s)

Causerne ( Arm. Կոզեռն ) is a former Armenian cemetery in Yerevan . In Soviet times, the cemetery was liquidated and partially built up.

History

Causerne cemetery was located on the hill of the same name in the north of Yerevan. It was the oldest cemetery of the city (XI-XIII century). During excavations of the 1930s, burials in stone boxes dating from the 4th-7th centuries were found here. Nearby, similar pre-Christian burials were discovered [1] .

The cemetery got its name in honor of the 11th century Armenian scientist Hovhannes Cosern buried in it [1] . The name Causernus also received the adjacent to the cemetery . In 1632, Catholicos Movses III Tatevatsi was buried next to Hovhannes Cosern [2] . There was also buried the wardpet Melikset Vzhanetsi . A gravestone chapel was destroyed above their graves, destroyed during the 1679 earthquake . In the XIX century, a new chapel was built on this site [3] .

In the 1930s, according to the development plan of Yerevan, the cemetery was liquidated. The inscriptions on the tombstones were photographed, the remains and tombstones were partially moved to other cemeteries [3] .

The chapel-tomb was built into a residential building. Its walls were covered with plaster, and gravestones served as a backup for the wooden floor [4] . The former chapel housed a bedroom [5] .
