Friedrich Guernsheim (1875)

Friedrich Gernsheim was born July 17, 1839 in Worms in the family of a doctor. The first experience of playing the piano was gained by studying with his mother, who perfectly owned this instrument, and since 1848 he studied under the guidance of Ernst Power . Since 1852 he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, from where in 1855 he went to graduate from Paris [4] .

In 1865, Guernsheim became a teacher of piano and composition at the Cologne Conservatory [4] .

In 1874, he was appointed director of the Conservatory in Rotherdam [4] .

From 1890 to 1897, Friedrich Guernsheim taught at the Stern Conservatory and conducted the concerts of the Julius Stern Choral Society in Berlin [4] . Since his appointment as conductor of Gesangverein, he has become especially involved in vocal music and has written many choral works [5] [6] .

Since 1897 he was a conductor of Eruditio musica in Rotherdam and a member of the Senate of the in the German capital [4] [7] .

Guernsheim is also known as a composer in the field of chamber music, on the account of which there are several dozen works [4] [5] [8] [9] .

Friedrich Gernsheim died on September 10, 1916 in the city of Berlin and was buried in the Jewish Weissense cemetery .

Among his students was, in particular, Engelbert Humperdinck , author of the opera Hansel and Gretel .
