History

Rugby team in Karachi, 1934

The Karachi Rugby Union was founded in 1926, which became the starting point in the history of Pakistani rugby [2] . The game was popular among foreigners, and the rugby union of Karachi until the recognition of Pakistan's independence participated in the championship of India among fans [2] . The first records of Pakistani rugby players date back to the 1950s: July 2, 1955 at the Niaz Stadium, the victory over the Chittagong team, made up of Europeans, was won by the East Pakistan Rifles club, made up of native Pakistanis and led by coach J. M. Riem. . JM Reay [3] .

In the 1960s, many foreigners left the country, and began to move much less frequently to India, so the East Pakistan Rifles club was already playing matches with the British Navy teams: the port of Karachi became the country's largest port [2] . In 1968-1969, new local players were accepted into the club, which gave hope for the development of rugby, but by the mid-1970s ships began to enter ships less often and the popularity of rugby decreased. Due to funding cuts, the Karachi rugby union no longer had a wide selection of teams to host matches [2] . In the 1990s, local residents revived the game with the help of players from Lahore and Karachi, assistance from foreign embassies, various commissions and banks. In Islamabad , a rugby club was formed in 1992, the Lahore Club also appeared ", Who became the principal adversary of the Islamabad in rugby. Thanks to a team from Karachi, a round-robin championship was also held in the country.

In 2003, a Pakistani rugby team was convened, [1] making its debut at a tournament in Sri Lanka , where India also played. Pakistan is currently participating in the Division 3 Center Zone tournament of the Asian Championship [1] . Among the most famous players of the national team, Daniel Moussa stands out - a Pakistani who was born in Jalalabad and lived for a long time in Scotland, became the team captain in 2010.
