History and Description

The Neuenhof Palace is one of the most historic monuments of Lüdenscheid. The first mention of the castle was found in the document of 1326: the researchers believed that it was originally a complete fortified castle. In 1981, on the site of today's moat, fragments of dishes from the 14th century were found. In 1643 the main building of the castle was rebuilt using the medieval foundation of the predecessor building, and in 1693 the main building was heavily damaged by fire - its reconstruction, including the construction of several extensions, lasted until 1695. In the 18th century, the building underwent numerous structural changes: in 1746, a risalit was added between the towers. The last significant stage in the history of the building was the restructuring of its northern "advanced fortification" ( German Vorburg ), which occurred in 1808.

The castle is the clan residence of the aristocratic family von Neuenhof: but the descendants of the clan did not live in the palace from the 19th century until the 1970s. During the Second World War , in the period 1943-1944, prisoners of war and "forced laborers" ( him. Zwangsarbeiter ) of the local forestry were placed in the palace. After the war, most of the estate was confiscated and used by the Belgian military command for many years. In 1974, Count von Bush-Kessel finally moved to the ancient residence of a kind [1] .
