History and Description
The idea of building a tower in honor of former German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in Ludenscheid arose in the autumn of 1898: on January 12, 1899, a construction committee was formed with 19 members, and newspapers began to urge the townspeople to make donations; By February 21 of the following year, 26,543 marks from 1300 people were collected. As in the neighboring city of Hagen , the award-winning design by architect Wilhelm Kreis , modified by the urban architect Jodikke “in accordance with local conditions”, was chosen for construction. Of the three possible seats, board members, by a 75% majority, chose Mount Breitenloh - although architect Kreis himself spoke for Mount Hyo ( German: Höh ). The city administration provided a 16- acre plot of land, acquired in 1899 for the construction of a sports ground [1] .
Construction work was carried out by the local Hugo Klein company - individual blocks of the square pedestal of the tower, which had a height of 17.5 meters, weighed up to five tons. The construction, led by Yodikke, was completed in October 1901. The official opening ceremony was postponed to May 11, 1902 [2] [3] , in the hope of good weather. The fire at the top of the tower - in its two-meter bowl - was lit even before the formal opening: April 1, Bismarck’s birthday. In 1956, a school named after Albert Schweitzer was built around Bismarcturm - the building was now in the middle of the school site. On January 25, 1965, the Ludenscheid City Council decided to demolish the tower, which required a major reconstruction [4] : the demolition was carried out in the summer of that year. Part of the building materials was used in the construction and repair of neighboring buildings.
