The painting was commissioned by Bosch on a vow . The painting written on the blackboard belongs to a series of works aimed at giving examples of religious piety . Such examples were borrowed from the life of saints, Christ, and, in particular, episodes of his Passion . The artist followed already existing examples of such paintings dating back to the type of compositions that were prevalent in Northern Europe since the beginning of the 15th century. Bosch’s religious paintings echo the art of Hugo van der Hus , Dirk Bouts , Rogier van der Weyden and Jan van Eyck , Robert Kampen , Hans Memling . Bosch, traditionally depicted in the background, was given the cozy appearance of a typical Dutch town looming in a lilac-gray veil - perhaps this is his native Hertogenbosch . The costume of the customer, who so unceremoniously “invaded” the scene of traditional iconography , resembles miparti - fashionable in the 15th century. two-tone outfit.
