History and Description

The Church of Christ the Redeemer in Lüdenscheid (or its predecessor) was first mentioned in documents from 1072: before the Reformation, its patron was Saint Medard , who was also considered the patron saint of the whole city. In the XII century, on the site of the predecessor building - the one-nave basilica, built in the Romanesque style - the late Romanesque two-nave church was erected, the choir which was then rebuilt already in the Gothic style. The building, which was in need of substantial repair, was demolished in 1822, but a fragment of the Romanesque tower was still preserved from it. On March 26, 1826, the grand opening of the new church building took place, created according to the project of the master builder from Verdun Abbey Engelbert Kleinhants - the project of the local architect Wilhelm Tappe was rejected earlier, in 1823, according to the results of the examination report of the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel .

At the beginning of the 21st century, the bell tower of the Church of Christ the Redeemer was considered the oldest surviving building in the city of Ludenscheid: it underwent repairs and restoration in 1920 and 2000, receiving new bells, which now numbered five. Researchers also believed that the temple’s altar was created by Adolf von Fagedes, a student of Karl Schinkel. At the end of 2018, the church received a new organ [1] .
