History

While in the second half of the 16th century, Mughal painting developed at the court of Akbar , art developed independently in the Deccan sultanates. The style of pictorial miniature flourished at the court of the ruler of the Bakhmani sultanate and later at the courts of the sultans of Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, Bidar, Berara and Golkonda, widely known as the Dekan school of painting. One of the oldest surviving examples of Dekan painting are illustrations of the Ahmadnagar manuscript of the poem in the Persian language Tarif-i-Hussain Shahi (1565), which is kept in Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandala ( English ) in Pune . About 400 pictorial miniatures, made in the characteristic Persian style, contain the Bijapur manuscript “Stars of Sciences” ( English , 1570), stored in the library of Chester Beatty , in Dublin ( Ireland ).

Style

The decan school of painting is characterized by rich and vibrant colors. The main colors are blue, red and pink. The main role is played by symmetry. Figures of people, architectural structures, trees, flowers, objects, folds on clothes and even the position of various parts of the body are placed on the canvas so that everything is balanced.

Many of the examples of 16th century Dean painting. designed in Persian style, as local artists were descendants of artists invited to India from Persia. However, over time, the Persian elements were largely replaced by local ones. A distinctive feature of the Bijapur style is the abundance of golden color and numerous flowering plants. Golkond style is also similar to Persian.

Deccan painting flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, passing through multiple phases of maturation and long-term stagnation. Later, in the 18-19 centuries, when the Dean became part of the Great Mogul Empire , the Deccan style gradually fell into disrepair and gave way to a new style of Hyderabad painting, which developed in the region, particularly at the court of Hyderabad Nizam . Basically the coloring of decan painting followed Islamic turkish ( eng. ) And persian traditions, especially arabesques , which consisted of purely decan leafy ornament.
