Biography
Maximilian Bern was born on November 11, 1849 in the city of Kherson in the family of a doctor, after the sudden death of which the family of Bern moved to live in the Austrian capital .
He began to study at the University of Vienna , who was forced to leave in 1873 (due to financial difficulties), having received a job as a guard at a riding school [4] .
In 1875, M. Bern wrote the novel “ Auf schwankem Grunde ”, which was a great success and gave him the opportunity to leave the service and fully devote himself to literature. He began to diligently study the history of German literature and in 1877 published the “ Deutsche Lyrik seit Goethes Tode ” [4] .
A characteristic feature of his writings is pessimism , at times taking on a hint of real despair; German criticism explained this pessimism by the Russian origin of Maximilian Bern [4] [5] .
Of the other works of Bern, the most famous are: “Sich selbst im Wege”; Lustige Stunden (1887); Neue Klänge (1897); “Die zehnte Muse” [6] [4] .
Maximilian Bern died on September 10, 1923 in Berlin.
From 1887 to 1897, Bern was married to the writer and actress .
