Building History
Since 1794, Nikolaev became the base of the Black Sea Fleet . The residence of the chief fleet commander is housed in a building built in the style of Russian classicism , designed by architect P.V. Neelov.
Museum
The opening of the museum took place on July 30, 1978 , on the day of the Navy .
More than 3,000 exhibits are located in 12 halls of the museum. Models of ships, from first ships to modern ones, fragments of the first known boats raised from the waters of the Black Sea and the rivers of southern Ukraine, rare maps, photographs, newspapers, numerous documents telling about the development of shipbuilding and fleet at the mouth of the Southern Bug and Ingul .
The museum has preserved a unique collection of old weapons of the 18th-19th centuries: pistols, halberds, mortars and more. Various exhibits are still being received from residents of the city, among them there are quite a few unique ones. The halls of the museum often exhibit imported exhibitions.
