Biography

Born in 1915 at the Serbka station (now the territory of Odessa region). Latvian.

He graduated from the Odessa Railway College (1940), the Higher School of Economics at the Central Committee of the CPSU (1947), the Latvian Pedagogical Institute (1948) and the graduate school of the University of Latvia (1951). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Since 1932 - a worker on the railway, in 1941-1944 he worked as a machinist in Kazakhstan. In the mid-1940s - Deputy Head of the Department of the Central Committee of the Young Communist League of Latvia.

From 1948 on teaching and research, vice-rector, in 1962-1970 rector of the Latvian State University . In 1971-1981, director of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR, in 1981-1992 director of the Institute of Philosophy and Law.

Doctor of Philosophy (1962), Professor (1963), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR (1963). Honored Scientist of the Latvian SSR (1969).

Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia (since 1961). He was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR from the 6th to the 10th convocation.

He died in Riga in 2011.
