Competitions were held in the Camonica Valley in the central Alps . In the city of Temu (1130 meters above sea level) there was a start of the men's race, women and juniors started the fight from the central square of Ponte di Legno (1250 meters above sea level), juniors started in the area of the intermediate station of the cableway (1610 meters above sea level) ) The finish line of all the races was on the Tonale pass at an altitude of 1883 meters above sea level. The track had several long descents and flat parts, which differed from the traditional “up” runs [1] [2] .
For two days before the start of the rain, it ended only closer to the start of the competition. The races took place in cool weather (up to +15 degrees) with a slight wind.
346 runners (141 men, 88 women, 71 juniors and 46 juniors) from 40 countries of the world went to the start. Each country could put up to 6 people in the men's race, up to 4 people in the women's and junior and up to 3 people among the juniors. The strongest in the team championship were determined by the sum of the places of the four best participants in men, the three best in women and juniors, the two best in juniors.
Sevilai Eitemish from Turkey won the junior race and helped her team become the strongest in the team championship for the fourth time in a row. The current champion Lea Einfalt from Slovenia this time was content with a bronze medal.
Among the juniors, the stubborn struggle for victory was fought by Ugandan Michael Cherop and 2011 champion Adem Karagez from Turkey. In this confrontation, the representative of Africa was better, ahead of the opponent by 12 seconds. In the team event, the Uganda team first took first place.
Andrea Mayr from Austria became the four-time world champion among women. Since 2006, she won all the championships held with the profile of the track "up" (in even years). Valentina Belotti , the only Italian runner who was among the winners in the individual standings at this tournament, which was home to athletes from the Apennines, was 29 seconds behind her. Morgan Arritola from the USA, a participant in the 2010 Winter Olympics in skiing, took third place and helped her team win gold medals in the team championship.
In the men's race from the start, two athletes from Eritrea offered a high pace. Soon, one of them, Petro Mamu , became the sole leader, Teklai Azeria ran behind in 20 seconds, the Russian Andrei Safronov was in third place. In that order, they came to the finish line. For the third time in its career, Azerbaijan has become the vice world champion in mountain running. For the first time in the 28-year history of the tournament, Russian men climbed the podium, and twice: in the individual championship, Safronov won the bronze medal, and the team achieved similar success among the teams [3] .
