History and Description
The spacious brick basilica of St. Aloysius was built in the Romanesque style from 1891 to 1895: the building features a two-tower facade ( German: Doppelturmfassade ), transept and step choirs . The design of the building was proposed by architects Karl Rüdell ( German: Carl Michael Rüdell , 1855-1939), who worked actively in Cologne , and Richard Odenthal ( German: Odenthal , 1855-1919); the consecration of the church took place on June 21, 1894 [1] . St. Sebastian’s Church in the village of Lobberich, also located in North Rhine-Westphalia , was built on a similar project. Above the main entrance of the building in Iserlohn there are three "Gothic roses " (characteristic round windows), created according to the sketch of the artist Irmgard Wessel ( German: Irmgart Wessel-Zumloh , 1907-1980).
From the original decoration to the beginning of the 21st century, the Church of St. Aloysius preserved: the “ Way of the Cross ” (see Divine Service of the Way of the Cross ), benches, a confessional and stone statues. A wooden crucifix is a much earlier element: this work was created in Nuremberg around 1520 and later acquired by the parish. The wooden image of the seated Virgin was also created before the construction of the temple: it dates from around 1380 and was probably made in southwestern Germany; it currently belongs to the parish. The two western towers carry a total of four steel bells, which were cast in Bochum in 1920.
