Biography

Anton Asher was born on July 15, 1820 in the city of Dresden . He received his initial dramatic education in his hometown under the direction of Ludwig Thicke [2] . His debut took place in 1837 in Gainichen [3] .

Asher played in various theaters in Saxony for a long time; in 1839, having spent some time in Wiesbaden , he entered the service of the Dresden court theater [2] .

In 1848, Anton Asher became the chief director at the Friedrich-Wilhelm Theater in Berlin, and in 1860 he was approved as the chief director of the Karl-Theater Vienna. In a short time, he gave both theaters a lot of weight and placed them next to Parisian and London scenes [2] .

As an actor, Asher was very successful in the role of bonvivans. On the pages of the EEBE the following assessment was given to his work: β€œ On stage, he was most distinguished by humor; his sparkling gaiety made a wonderful impression; he turned the most ordinary dialogue into a witty improvisation, always remaining very far from the cartoon. He was especially interesting in those roles that gave him the opportunity to reveal his amazing resourcefulness and accuracy of the language; as soon as he appeared on the scene, he immediately became its center ” [2] .

Anton Asher died on April 21, 1884 in Merano [3] [4] .
