History
In 1949, Khairettin Kayajik, professor at the Department of Forestry at Istanbul University , proposed the creation of an arboretum. First, an area of 38 ha was allocated for the arboretum.
Between 1959 and 1961, Camille Ginet, inspector of the Sorbonne Botanic Garden, was involved in planning the network of roads inside the arboretum. Due to lack of funds, the project took a long time to complete.
Opened July 12, 1982 and named after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), the founder of the Republic of Turkey, in honor of his 100th birthday. The arboretum is owned and funded by the General Directorate of Forestry, and also performs administrative functions. The Department of Forestry of Istanbul University is a scientific partner of the Botanical Garden.
