Biography

The origin is not clear. Most researchers identify him with a nobleman named Wilielmus , who according to Gesta Berengaria imperatoris in 888, having crossed the Alps , arrived in Italy at the head of a detachment of 300 riders to support Duke of Spoleto Guido III in his fight with Berengarius, King of Italy.

Perhaps Guido, having established himself on the imperial throne, generously rewarded his supporter with land possessions.

According to Galeotto Del Carretto , author published in 1493, Cronica degli Illustrissimi Principi et Excellentissimi Marchesi di Monferrato , the toponym Monferrato comes from the words iron (“fer”) and mountain (“mont”).

The modern historian Olympio Musso ( Olimpio Musso ) suggested that the patrimonial possession of Guglielmo I was the city of Montferra ( Montferrat ) north of Grenoble. There in ancient times there was Sermoran county, about the rulers of which there is no information. Perhaps one of them was just Guglielmo I.

Count Guglielmo (Guillaume) is mentioned in the act, dated 924 year. Its authors are Lambert, Archbishop of Milan, and the Counts Guillaume, Gizelbert and Samson, the addressee is Rudolf II , King of Burgundy. The context of this document makes it clear that the three graphs mentioned were in opposition to Adalbert Ivreisky - the claimant to the throne of the king of Italy. Which gives one more plus in favor of Burgundy origin of Guglielmo I.

It is not known which seniors were part of the county that Guglielmo I received in Italy. In the investor of 967, Emperor Otto I lists the cities of his son Aleramo: Acqui, Savonne, Asti, Montferrat, Turin, Vercelli, Parma, Cremona and Bergamo. Probably inherited from the father of possession are either in the middle or at the end of this list. One hypothesis is that Guglielmo I was the Count of Vercelli.
