General Features
Line 11 is managed by the Barcelona Transportation Authority (TMB). This line operates in the light subway mode, therefore double-wagon trains run on the line, while eight-wagon trains are used on the remaining lines; and station platforms are shorter than at many other stations. Two Alstom TMB 500 trains are operated on the line at intervals of 7 minutes and 13 minutes. Train management is from the Barcelona Metro Control Center, located in the La Sagrera area. [3]
The line is predominantly single-track, and only at the Torre Baro-Valbona station were 2 tracks built. [4] During construction, some aspects of the stations were taken into account by the standards of the traditional metro. This was done in case a decision is made to include a section of line 4, such as a 400-meter footprint for the extension of the platform, and preservation of the maximum allowable slope of the tunnels of 4%. [5] [6]
In 2010, the total passenger traffic on the line amounted to 1.1 million trips. Thus, line 11 is the last line in terms of traffic after the northern section of lines 9 and 10 (cat. L9 Nord and L10 Nord). [7]

Background
Long before the construction of line 11 began, in terms of the metro in 1971, it was originally planned that line 1 from the Torres y Bazhes station would be extended to the Siutat Meridian area. However, subsequently, in 1974, a new metro construction plan came out, where route 1 of the route was redirected to the city of Santa Coloma, located east of Barcelona, and in the area of Ciutat Meridiana, it was planned to build a continuation of line 3 from Lesseps station. [eight]
Easy Subway Plan
Twenty-one years later, in 1995, the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Jordi Pujol, during a rally in the Ziutat Meridian district, was promised a light metro line to the northern part of Nou Barris County. Despite the initial rejection of the Barcelona City Council, due to which the construction of line 11 could be delayed until 2010, subsequently, the Generalitat and the Barcelona City Council agreed to the construction of the line. [9]
In 1997, the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità consortium was created, integrating the work of the Generalitat of Catalonia , the Barcelona City Council and Entitat Metropolitana del Transport, responsible for transport management in the metropolitan area of Barcelona . [10] The very first master plan approved by ATM - the Master Plan for Construction 2001-2010 ( cat. Pla Director d'Infraestructures 2001-2010 ) adopted the provision "AX18" on the construction of a light metro line called L11, with a trace of the line from the Trinitat Nova station in the eponymous district of Barcelona to the Can Quias station in the eponymous district of Moncada y Reshak . [eleven]
Construction and opening
Construction work on the line began in 2001. The initial construction budget was € 48 million euros, which subsequently increased to € 86 million. The construction was financed by the Government of Catalonia , the Spanish government and the European Union .
In early 2002, tunneling was completed throughout the site. In the middle of the next year, 2003, construction work was fully completed and commissioning began, as well as the running of test trains. [12] On December 14, the grand opening of the entire line took place. In the first year, passenger traffic on the line averaged 2,900 passengers per day.
Train Automation
From July 27, 2009, and for a month, the line was closed for passengers to install platform sliding doors at the stations. The installation of doors at the stations was one of the last stages to start operation on the line of automatic trains without drivers. Starting December 16, 2009, Series 500 trains operate on a line without drivers [13] on the section between Can Quias and Casa de l'Aigua. From the last to the Trinitat Nova, trains follow already under manual control, since there is no train detection system on the Trinitat Nova, the sensors of which at other stations of the line are built into the platform. This is due to the fact that the platform of the Trinitat Nova station was built in 1999, and during the construction of such options, the platform did not provide for further additional equipment.
Perspectives
There are no plans for line 11, [14] in the General Construction Plan of 2009—2018 ( cat. Pla Director d'Infraestructures.20092018 ), although in 2006 the Generalitat stated that the line could be extended to the railway line "Castelbisbal / Papiol - Mollet." [15]
