Biography

Born May 23, 1924 in Bamberg, the eldest of three children in the family of the woodcutter Carl Dechner. His mother Margaret Karolayne (nee Reischböck - him. Reischböck ) grew up in Franconia and Lower Bavaria . Both parents were Catholics , although the mother once came from Protestantism .

From 1924 to 1964 he lived in the former hunting lodge of the prince-bishops of the Würzburg principality-bishopric in Steigerwald, and then for two years in the country house of his friend in Fischbrunn (near Hersbruck and Franconian Alb ).

In 1929 - 1933 he studied at the elementary school in Trossefurt (near Würzburg ). Then he moved to the seminary at the Franciscan monastery in Dettelbach . Here he first lived in the family of his godfather and patron, a member of the Spiritual Council priest Leopold Baumann, and then in the monastery itself. In 1934 - 1942 he studied and lived in Bamberg in the gymnasium Alte, Neue and Deutsche Gymnasium together with the Carmelites and religious sisters from the Congregation of Jesus . [3]

In 1942, he passed the final exams and, like the rest of his classmates, went to serve in the Wehrmacht as a volunteer . Before the capitulation of Germany, he served as a soldier, and then a paratrooper . He was wounded several times. [four]

In 1946 - 1947 he studied at the University of Munich , where he attended lectures on jurisprudence , theology, philosophy and psychology. [four]

In 1947 - 1951 he studied modern German literary criticism , philosophy and history at the University of Würzburg . [four]

In 1951 he defended his thesis on the topic “ Lenau 's Poetry as an Expression of Metaphysical Despair” and received an academic degree of a Ph.D. [four]

In 1951, he married a Protestant Elfy Tuh, from a marriage with whom she had three children - Katya (born 1951 ), Barbel (born 1958 ) and Thomas ( 1959 - 1984 ). [4] [5] [6] Because of this marriage, Bishop Würzberg excommunicated Dechner from the church. [one]

In 1957, he published his first critical book on religion, “What do you think about Christianity?” ( Ger. Was halten Sie vom Christentum? ). In the same year he became a member of the literary critics group “Kitsch, Convention and Art” ( German Kitsch, Konvention und Kunst )

In 1958, the novel "Florence without the sun" ( it. Florenz ohne Sonne ).

In 1970, Deschner signed a contract with the publishing house Rowohlt Verlag on the writing of the “ Criminal History of Christianity ”, the first two volumes of which were published in 1986 . Criticism

Partiality and unscientific

Deschner is criticized by scientists for their unscientific approach to church history research. [13]

In 1992, in the Catholic Academy City Schwerte Professor of Historical Theology Siegen University Hans Reinhard Seliger a symposium was organized and held on the topics covered by Deschner in the first two volumes of The Criminal History of Christianity. As a result of the event, a collection of articles was published by 23 speakers, in which a critical look was presented at the Deershner approach in developing the stated theme. [14]

Once, Deshner explained what prompted him to criticize religion: “ I write out of hostility. Because this is the story of those who made me their enemy . ” [15] In turn, professor of emeritus of church history of the University of Bamberg, Georg Denzler noted: [16] " Such a motivation can never become the basis for serious historiography ." Denzler also criticizes the work of Dechner with sources: “ He is not familiar with source study , is engaged in a one-sided selection of literature, interprets printed sources in isolation from the context, considers a separate event as general, unfairly refers to sources that do not allow to verify what was written .” [16] [17] And although Denzler called Deshner "the most erudite devil's advocate " [18] , he nevertheless noted that Deschner lacked historical thinking and historical judgment. Narrow understanding of the phenomenon of religion

The philosopher and theologian Hubertus Munarik he criticizes Deschner for the repressed religiousness, which he stopped to doubt. Munaric believes that Dechner's focus on religious dogma and the identification of religion and faith in God impede its universalistic understanding, as in Giordano Bruno .
