Biography

Marina Berko was born in a family of doctors and lived with her family in Kiev before the Great Patriotic War . In 1939, Marina Berko graduated from secondary school and entered the historical-theoretical faculty of the Kiev Musical College , and in 1940 - the same faculty of the Kiev State Conservatory [1] .

In 1941, the Berko family was evacuated to Sverdlovsk , where Marina Berko entered the 2nd year of the historical-theoretical faculty of the Sverdlovsk Conservatory [2] and studied at this faculty in 1941-1944 and 1945-1946. (in 1944-1945, Marina Berko studied at the Moscow Conservatory , having moved to Moscow for a year for family reasons).

In 1946, Marina Berko graduated from the Ural State Conservatory [3] as the only graduate [2] of the historical-theoretical faculty; The entire edition of the Ural Conservatory in 1946 consisted of 12 people.

In the year of the tenth anniversary of the historical-theoretical faculty the conservatory graduated from M. Berko (1946). Her thesis was the first surviving in the manuscript funds of the university: the theme of the work “Romances of A. Borodin”.

From September 1945 to August 1946, Marina Berko combined her studies at the Ural Conservatory with teaching at the Sverdlovsk School of Music , where she taught foreign musical literature, and from September 1946 to August 1956. she taught at the Ural Conservatory at the Department of Music History, continuing to work at the Sverdlovsk School of Music. Among colleagues and friends of M. A. Berko are musicologists V. J. Konen [5] , N. F. Orlov , V. M. Scheglov, and among the students who attended her course in the history of foreign music, the singer V. M. Baeva and V. M. Nestyagina , singers Yu. A. Gulyaev and B. T. Shtokolov , conductors P. S. Varivod and P. I. Gorbunov . This period includes the articles by M. A. Berko in the magazine “Soviet Music” about the Sverdlovsk Opera and Ballet Theater and its productions [6] [7] .

From 1956 to 1999 Marina Berko lives in Yerevan , works as a senior music editor at the film studio “Armenfilm” , a member of the Union of Composers of Armenia (since 1960). During this period, articles, monographs were written, collections of works on Armenian music were compiled. M. A. Berko acts as a music columnist for the newspapers “Sovietak Hayastan”, “Golos Armenii” [8] , creates cycles of musical programs for the republican radio. Among the works of M. A. Berko of the Yerevan period are books about the composer L. M. Saryan , conductor G. E. Budagian , about the Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory , articles about the creative path and the works of composers A. G. Arutyunyan , M. Israelyan, R. S. Sarkisyan , K. A. Orbelyan , analytical reviews of congresses and plenums of the Union of Composers of Armenia and other works.

MA Berko was also the editor-compiler of the collection “The Musical Culture of the Armenian SSR” [9] .

Her [Marina Berko] articles in the allied press ... helped to gain deserved recognition and fame for our composers such as Edgar Avannisyan , Gazaros Saryan, Avet Terteryan , Tigran Mansuryan , Martun Israelian ... Marina Berko left a deep mark on Armenian musicology and journalism.

After the death of her husband in 1998, M. A. Berko moved to Israel to her younger sister. She died in Bat Yam in 2008.
