Pudicity on the coins of ancient Rome

Aureus Decius Trajan . On the obverse is his wife, Guernia Etruscilla , on the reverse is Pudicitia, putting a veil over his head [1]

Pudicity on coins of Ancient Rome is present on about 120 types of banknotes of the Roman Empire . The cult of the goddess of modesty and chastity of existed back in the days of the Roman Republic, but subsequently they began to neglect it [2] .

The first image on the coins falls on the reign of Trajan (98–117). On the obverse is a bust of his wife Pompeii Plotinus , the reverse occupies the altar of the goddess with her herself on the curl chair [3] . The personified personification of modesty can be found on coins depicting many empresses, in particular Vibia Sabina [4] , Faustina the Elder [5] , Faustina the Younger [6] , Brutia Crispina [7] , Julius Domna [8] and others [9] .

A hallmark of the goddess of modesty is the veil on her head. She stands on a number of coins, but sits more often [9] .

The place of Pudicitia on the reverse, while the emperor takes the obverse, is not completely clear for numismatists. Modesty and chastity were not virtues to be associated with a ruler. Accordingly, according to some assumptions, they are hybrid coins , according to others - the empress is directly depicted in the form of Pudicy [2] .
