Biography

At the age of 18, Armin Lachet joined the CDU , in 1981 he graduated from school in his hometown of Aachen and began to study law at the universities of Munich and Bonn . In 1986, he also began journalistic activities - in particular, he worked as a Bonn correspondent for the Bavarian television news Bayerischen Fernsehens. In 1987, Lachet passed the first state legal exam. Four years later, he became the chief editor of the newspaper KirchenZeitung Aachen, from 1995 to 1999 he headed the publishing house Einhard-Verlag [5] .

In 1988-1993 he was the scientific adviser to the President of the Bundestag, .
In 1989-2004 he was a member of the city council of Aachen, in 1991 he became deputy chairman of the Aachen organization of the CDU [6] .

From 1994 to 1998 - Member of the Bundestag from the first constituency of Aachen.

From 1999 to 2005 - Member of the European Parliament .

In 2001, he headed the Aachen organization of the CDU.

From 2005 to 2010 - Minister of Generations, Family, Women and the Integration of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In 2008, he entered the national board of the CDU.

Since 2010 - Member of the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia.

From 2010 to 2012 - Deputy Chairman of the CDU Land Organization in North Rhine-Westphalia, from 2012 - Chairman. Since 2013 - Chairman of the CDU faction in the Landtag.

Since December 5, 2012 - Deputy Chairman of the CDU.

In May 2017, the CDU won a historic victory in the land elections in North Rhine-Westafilia, gaining 34.5% of the vote against 30.5% of the SPD (this result was the worst for the Social Democrats since the end of World War II in a region where they almost invariably dominated). Moreover - 12% received the FDP , which lost representation in the Bundestag in previous elections. As a result of her return to the political arena, a “black and yellow” coalition of conservatives with economic liberals became possible [7] .

On June 27, 2017, Lachet took over as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. [8]

On October 31, 2018, two days after Angela Merkel announced her refusal to fight for the party’s leadership in the next election, The Straits Times called Lashet a possible compromise figure for her successor compared to Merkel’s crown princess Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and "Anti-Merkel" by Jens Span [9] .
