Spinnaker ( English spinnaker ) - a type of sail , designed for use in full courses, from gulfwind to fordewinda .

On the yacht it is used as an extra, in most cases, with the spinnaker raised, the staysail is removed.

The sail is made of lightweight fabric, has a convex shape and is similar to a parachute by the principle of action.

Content

Associated rigging

Raise the spinnaker by the tether angle . Tack and clew angles are absent at the spinnaker, braces are attached to the corners of the sail, and the wind and leeward braces are distinguished (according to the sides with respect to the wind). Sometimes only a windward is called a brass, and a lee is called a sheet. Management of braces helps Barber delays, or "braces traps".

The windward angle of the sail is fixed with a spinnaker boom (or spinnaker-ray). Outrigger is another auxiliary control element.

Spinnaker Management

Managing the spinnaker, as well as the yacht, with the spinnaker raised, presents a certain difficulty, and is a sign of the skill of the yachtsman .

Production

Spinnaker staging is carried out from a sailing bag - kitty or specially allocated space for sail located on the boat’s tank. The halyard and braces are fixed at the corresponding corners of the sail, and the spinnaker rails are installed. The halyard is sharply chosen, controlling the position of the clew angles with the help of brass and yarn, and the spinnaker is opened and filled with the wind. Incorrect connection of braces to clew angles when lifting leads to twisting of the spinnaker.

Management

The control of the spinnaker is to ensure that the sail is not lightened. The control is carried out by adjusting the position of the spinnaker ray and braces. The optimal position is the location of the two lower corners of the spinnaker at the same level, with the maximum removal of the windward band.

Incorrect work with the spinnaker or severe weather conditions can lead the yacht to broaching .

Cleaning

Removing the spinnaker is not always a simple procedure, especially in strong winds. The basic rule when removing a spinnaker is its weathering, for this, for example, the sail is covered with a mainsail. The light-weight spinnaker sagged, and in this case it can be quickly cleaned to a regular place, and if necessary, correctly laid in the kitten.

Types of Spinnakers

Spinnakers are divided into symmetric and asymmetric.

By type of cut, spinnakers distinguish:

  • with radial cut
  • with horizontal cover
  • with mixed radial-horizontal cut
  • with star cover
  • with tri-radial cut

Interesting Facts

  • Spinnaker is the largest sail that attracts attention, so it is usually made bright and elegant, they are trying to advertise on it.
  • In 1999, in Dubai ( UAE ), the luxurious Burj Al-Arab Hotel (Arabian Tower) was built, which stands at sea and imitates a spinnaker in shape.
  • In 2005, a 170-meter-tall Spinnaker Tower was built in Portsmouth , imitating the shape of a sail. The tallest building in the UK, built outside of London. Currently, it has become one of the visual symbols of Portsmouth. [one]
