History
According to Spanish chronicles, during the arrival of Europeans, Indians lived in these places, who subsequently "died in wars with barbarian tribes." To cover the path connecting Buenos Aires with Upper Peru from the south of the raids of the Indian tribes, the Spaniards built a fortified line, and in these places at the end of the XVIII century Fort Melinkue was built.
In 1872, a railway was drawn through these places, and the San Urbano station was built here, around which the village began to grow. In 1889, the settlement and station were renamed Melinkue.
