Story
In 2003, Clarence attends the funeral of his father Jacobo. She also visits her cousin Daniela and her father Kilian, suffering from dementia . Clarence finds Kilian’s diary, which contains notes that he sent money to an unknown woman. She decides to ask a friend of the Julia family what she knows about it. Julia replies that the note was written by her deceased husband Manuel, but she does not know to whom the money was addressed. Clarence decides to go to the island herself, because she wants to learn more about her father's life.
On the island, Clarence is looking for the grave of Anton, and also meets Iniko, who reluctantly helps her learn more about the past plantation. They find Simon, who in the past was familiar with Kilian and Jacobo, he says that Iniko's grandfather was also a friend of Anton. When Clarence shows Iniko a photograph of the woman she is looking for, he recognizes her mother Bisila in her. Young people come to her house, and she, in the presence of both sons, tells about Kilian and herself and the difficult story of the relationship between their families.
In 1954, Kilian returned to the island of Fernando Po (now Bioko), where he was born and where his family is engaged in the cultivation of cocoa. Together with father Anton and brother Jacobo, they remain on the island, while his sister Catalina and mother leave. Sister gives Kilian a diary and asks to keep it. Jacobo introduces Kilian to local entertainment: drinking alcohol and prostitutes. A few months later, Anton decides to take Kilian to the village and introduce the Bubi people to the local people. There he attends the wedding of the daughter of his friend Anton Bizila, which he really likes. Some time later, Anton's health deteriorates, and he dies, after which Kilian leaves the island.
In 1957, Kilian returned to Bioko. Kilian meets Bisil again, as well as her husband Mosi and son. Meeting with Julia, he also learns about the growing unrest in society. Julia asks him and Bizil to help the local politician Gustavo. They hide Gustavo in the trunk and cross the border. After that, Kilian and Bizila start an affair that they try to keep secret. In 1964, Kilian receives a letter from his mother informing him that his sister is near death and asks him to return to Spain. He leaves the island for several months, and when he returns, he finds out that Bizila was raped by Jacobo and his friends. Jacobo's friends are soon found hanged, and when Bizila Mosi's husband tries to take revenge on Jacobo, he kills him with a pistol. Kilian sends Jacobo back to Spain. Bizila says that according to local traditions, she should mourn Mosi for a year, after which she will be free.
In 1968, a new president was elected in Equatorial Guinea , and most Spaniards had to leave the country. Kiliana is abducted by locals who want to avenge the death of Mosi, taken to the forest and forced him to dig a grave. At this time, Simon arrives and persuades them not to kill Kilian. Kilian tries to leave Bioko with Bizila and his and her son, but they are not released. They try to live as a family for some time, but in the end, Kilian still has to leave.
Clarence, after all she learned, returns to Kilian’s house again and brings him greetings from Bizila.
After some time, the sons of Bizila come to Kilian’s house, where they are met on the threshold by Clarence and Kilian’s daughter Daniela
