Short Biography
In 1974 he graduated from Leiden University , where he studied Indonesian philology. In 1977 he defended his master's degree, and in 1985 - his doctoral dissertation [1] . Later he worked as a teacher of the Indonesian language at the same university, as well as in various universities in Australia and Germany. Until 2009, he was a leading research fellow at the Asian Institute of the University of Melbourne .
Subsequently, he worked as a research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Belgium (2010) and the Netherlands (2013), the National Ethnographic Museum in Osaka (2011), Tokyo University of Foreign Languages (2014-2015) and at the University of Cologne ( 2016) [2] . He represented Australia at the International Council on Malay in 2000-2004. and since 2014
Research
He is engaged in a comparative historical study of Austronesian languages, in particular of their individual groups, and especially Malay. He contributed to the study of the structure and history of the Austronesian languages with an emphasis on the languages of Borneo and Taiwan . The monograph “Proto-Malayic”, recognized as a doctoral dissertation, devoted the reconstruction of the parent language of this group. He investigated the influence of the Malay language on the Malagasy language (Madagascar). At the beginning of scientific activity, he developed a phonological reconstruction of the proto-language of Batak languages [3] .
He is currently participating in a study of the linguistic and migration history of Madagascar through a grant from the Australian Research Council. Published over 70 books, monographs and articles.
