Background
The song “To Daddy” tells the story of a woman who, day after day, suffered the unfaithfulness and indifference of her husband, but did not give a look for the well-being of children [2] . When the children grow up and no longer need her, the heroine, leaving a farewell note, leaves the family in search of love and happiness, which she lacked all the past years [3] . The story is told on behalf of the child and, as Dolly Parton notes, describes the real relationship between her parents, with the only exception that her mother, despite all past grievances and sorrows, eventually returned home [2] .
For her All I Can Do record, Parton recorded the song “ Boulder to Birmingham ” by Emmylou Harris . Having decided to make the last surprise, in 1976 before the release she invited her to the studio to listen to the finished tracks [3] . Among them was “To Daddy,” which greatly impressed Harris [4] : “It's like a story from O. Henry , because it confuses you. You think that in the end the heroine will die, but Dolly makes a sharp somersault and everything ends in a completely different way ” [3] . As a result, despite the objections of his partner Porter Wagoner , Parton did not release the song herself, but ceded to her friend [5] .
Harris performed the song in November 1977 as a single, and then on the album Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town (1978) and quickly became one of the most popular in her repertoire [6] . The track climbed to No. 3 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs and reached the pinnacle of the RPM [7] [8] Country Tracks chart. In 2003, he also appeared on the tribute album Just Because I'm a Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton [9] . The version of Parton itself, recorded in 1976, was first published almost 20 years later [6] - on the collection I Will Always Love You. The Essential Dolly Parton One (1995) [10] .
