Methylbenzoate is an organic compound , benzoic acid methyl ester . It is a colorless liquid, poorly soluble in water, but well miscible with organic solvents.

When nitrated with a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids, it forms methyl-3-nitrobenzoate :

Getting

The condensation reaction of benzoic acid and methanol in an acidic environment ^[1] :

Application

In small concentrations, methyl benzoate has a pleasant smell of feijoa tree, so it is used in perfumes. Less commonly used as a solvent or bait for orchid bees Euglossini ^[2] .
