Chemical Properties
When nitrated with a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids, it forms methyl-3-nitrobenzoate :
In an aqueous solution, NaOH is hydrolyzed to methanol and sodium benzoate :
Getting
The condensation reaction of benzoic acid and methanol in an acidic environment [1] :
Application
In small concentrations, methyl benzoate has a pleasant smell of feijoa tree, so it is used in perfumes. Less commonly used as a solvent or bait for orchid bees Euglossini [2] .
