Biography

In 1385, after the death of his father, under the section with his brothers ( Pandolfo III , Andrea and Galeotto Novello), he received Rimini. In the same year, he was appointed vicar of Romagna by Pope Urban VI , and after 2 years - gonfalonier of the Church.

In 1390, the Bulgarian army defeated Alberico da Barbiano .

In 1397, he led the combined army of the pope, Florence and Venice in the war against the Duke of Milan, Gianalezzo Visconti . In 1401, he sided with the latter and defeated the Florentine army near Brescia, capturing Leopold of Austria .

After the death of Gian Galeazzo, Visconti took the side of the pope and took Brescia at the head of the papal forces.

In 1406, he again changed sides and was appointed governor of Milan (until 1407). Since 1409, he constantly fought on the side of the pope in the rank of commander in chief (captain general) of the Church. Of the three simultaneously acting popes, Gregory XII supported.

In 1412 he was appointed captain-general of the Venetian army in the war against the Hungarian invasion of King Sigismund . At the Battle of Mott, he was wounded and lost command to his brother, Pandolfo.

In 1416, after the death of his brother, Andrea succeeded Cesena. In the same year, July 12, at the Battle of Sant'Egidio, he was defeated by Braccio da Montone , was wounded and captured. Released for a ransom of 80 thousand ducats.

In the war with Milan, he lost Forlì and Gradara and was again captured, but the Duke of Filippo Maria Visconti freed him without ransom.

Carlo's wife was Elizabeth Gonzaga, daughter of Lodovico II Gonzaga , the marriage was childless. Before his death, he bequeathed his possessions to his nephews: the sons of Pandolfo III Malatesta inherited Rimini, Cesena and Fano, the sons of Malatesta dei Sonetti - Pesaro.
