Antun Schwartz ( Croatian Antun Švarc , German: Anton Schwarz ; October 18, 1823 , Zagreb - December 28, 1891 , Zagreb ) - Croatian violinist and conductor.
Born in a Jewish family, at birth he received the name Naftali, but later used the name Anton (Antun). He studied at the school of the Zagreb Musical Society (1839-1841) with Urai Wisner-Morgenstern and Antun Kirshhofer ( German Antun Kirschhofer ; 1807-1849), in 1841-1842. cultivated as a musician in Vienna under the direction of Solomon Sulzer . In 1844 he made his debut in his hometown as a violinist, the next year made a tour of Hungary and Silesia. Since 1847 he played in the orchestra of the Zagreb Opera, in 1857-1881. also performed as a conductor, specializing in particular in the operettas of Jacques Offenbach ; Offenbach's “Wedding at the Lanterns”, held under the direction of Schwartz in 1863, was the first operetta staged in Croatian. He supervised the string quartet. From 1851 until the end of his life he taught a violin class at the school of the Zagreb Music Society; among his students is Juro Eisenhut . The author of violin, choral and vocal compositions. Among other things, he was the cantor of one of the Zagreb synagogues.
A cousin, Lavoslav Schwarz ( Croatian Lavoslav Schwarz ; 1837-1906) is a well-known Croatian philanthropist who established a number of scholarships for university studies in Zagreb youth and founded the Jewish Nursing Home in Zagreb (Lavoslav Schwartz House).
