Asian Football Cup 2019 (qualifying tournament)

The teams of 46 countries participated in the qualifying tournament of the Asian Cup in 2019 , who fought for 23 tickets to the final tournament in the UAE . The selection for the tournament was combined with the selection for the 2018 World Cup .

Format

The qualifying tournament consisted of four rounds:

  • Round one : The 12 worst teams (according to the FIFA rating) were paired according to the draw and played two matches with each other on their field and on the opponent’s field. 6 winners went to the second round.
  • Second round : 6 winners of the first round and the remaining 34 Asian teams according to the lot were divided into 8 groups, within which a traditional two-round tournament was held.
    • The eight group winners and the four best teams from the runners-up received tickets to the final tournament of the Asian Cup 2019 and qualified for the third round of qualification for the final tournament of the World Cup 2018 .
    • The four worst teams from the runners-up, eight teams from the runners-up, and the four best teams from runners-up in the third round of qualifying for the Asian Cup 2019 final tournament.
    • The remaining 12 teams were to play in the playoff round for the right to take part in the third round of selection for the final tournament of the Asian Cup 2019.
  • Playoff round : 11 teams (Indonesia was disqualified), who finished last in the group stage of the second round, played 8 tickets to the third round.
    • Stage 1 : 10 teams were divided into pairs, playing with each other two matches on their field and on the opponent’s field. 5 winners went to the third round.
    • 2nd stage : 5 teams who lost in the matches of the 1st stage, and the team of Bhutan that joined them played two matches with each other on their field and on the opponent’s field. 3 winners went to the third round.
  • Third round : 24 national teams (16 from the second round and 8 from the playoff round) were divided by lot into 6 groups, in the framework of which a two-round tournament was held. The two best teams from each group went directly to the final of the Asian Cup 2019.

Members

Teams from 46 AFC members started in the qualifying tournament, including the first time for the Bhutan national team . They were divided into two parts in accordance with the FIFA rating for January 2015.

  • Despite the fact that the UAE was the host country of the Asian Cup 2019 and the national team of this country was automatically qualified for the final part of the tournament, it still took part in the qualification tournament, as it was combined with the selection for the 2018 World Cup in Russia .
  • The 47th member of AFC - Northern Mariana Islands - are not a member of FIFA and therefore could not participate in the selection.

Round One

In the first round, the 12 worst rated teams were eliminated on a home-away basis.

Round Two

In the second round, 40 teams were divided into 8 groups, within the framework of which a two-round tournament was held. 8 group winners and 4 best national teams from the runners-up went to the final tournament of the Asian Cup. The matches of the second round began on June 11, 2015 and ended on March 29, 2016.

A few days before the start of the second round, FIFA suspended the national team of Indonesia from participating in the qualifying tournament, as a result of which only 4 teams remained in group F. In October 2015, FIFA announced the suspension of Kuwait's membership. In matches with Myanmar, Laos and the Republic of Korea, Kuwait counted technical losses with a score of 0: 3.

On October 16, 2015, FIFA announced the suspension of the membership of the Kuwait Football Association due to non-compliance with the earlier decision on the need to review Kuwaiti sports law. [2] On January 13, 2016, FIFA awarded Myanmar a victory in the match Myanmar - Kuwait with a score of 3: 0 [3] . On April 6, 2016, FIFA awarded the Kuwait team technical losses with a score of 0: 3 in matches with Laos and South Korea.

Playoff Round

The eleven worst teams in the second round played 8 trips to the third round. The matches were held in two stages, each on the principle of "home and away." The first stage is June 2 and 7, 2016, the second stage is September 6 and October 11, 2016. The draw for this round was held on April 7, 2016.

Stage One

The winners of the pairs went directly to the third qualifying round. The losers took part in the second stage of the playoff round.

Second Stage

To the five losers in the 1st stage, the team of Bhutan was added by the results of the draw. 6 teams made up 3 pairs. The pair winners advanced to the third qualifying round. The losers finally dropped out of the qualifying tournament.

Round Three

24 teams from the second round and the playoff round were split by lot into 6 groups, within the framework of which a two-round tournament was held. The two best teams from each group reached the final of the Asian Cup.

The Kuwait team was disqualified, and the Guam team refused to participate. Their places were taken by the national teams of Nepal and Macau .
