Bo-Bowie, Samuel

In 1934, he married Livia Angst (1912-1984), the daughter of a sculptor, artist Carl Angst. With Libya they had two children - Manuel and Francoise.

He studied classical philology in Geneva, while learning to play the violin and piano. Then in 1926-1927. studied music in Vienna under the guidance of Guido Adler , in 1928-1929. In Paris, he studied composition with Paul Duke and the history of music with Andre Pirro , while studying the Greek language with Hubert Pernot . At various times, he also studied conducting with Felix Weingartner and Hermann Scherchen .

In 1929-1931 worked in Greece, studying Byzantine music and collecting musical folklore of the Dodecanese Islands; later published the monograph “Greek Folk Song on the Dodecanese” ( French: La chanson populaire grecque du Dodécanèse ; Paris, 1936) - this work, along with a number of subsequent publications of Bo-Bovi, has not lost its scientific significance [4] . Returning to Switzerland, in 1931-1958. taught modern Greek literature at the University of Geneva , since 1942 professor. In the 1930-1940s. He was among the first Western translators of Jorgos Seferis and Odiseas Elitis , also translated into French Kostis Palamas , Angelos Sikelianos and other major Greek poets, spoke with articles about them. He published an anthology "Young Greek poetry" ( French La jeune poésie grecque ; Lausanne, 1940) and "Poetry of modern Greece" ( French Poésie de la Grèce moderne ; Lausanne, 1946).

At the same time since 1933 he taught orchestration at the Geneva Conservatory , and since 1942 he conducted conducting; among his students, in particular, Charles Duthoit . In 1957-1970 director of the conservatory. In 1955-1960 Chairman of the Association of Swiss Musicians.

He performed as a conductor, mainly with the Romanesque Orchestra of Switzerland , as well as with the choir of the Society for Spiritual Singing ( French Société de Chant Sacré ), which he headed in 1938-1977; with this choir he performed, in particular, the world premiere of Frank Martin oratorio “Golgotha” (1950). As an opera conductor, in 1952 he staged The Adventures of the Hang by Igor Stravinsky in the presence of the author - the second production after the Venetian premiere a year earlier. In 1959, he conducted the A.A. Mozart’s opera “ Everybody Does It ”, staged for the 20th anniversary of the Geneva International Competition of Performers with laureates in the main parties.

A series of studies Bo-Bovi dedicated to Jean-Jacques Rousseau ; after the author’s death, they were collected in the book “Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Music” ( fr. Jean-Jacques Rousseau et la musique ; 1988).

Like all laureates of the Geneva City Prize, Samuel Bod-Bowie is buried in the Kings Cemetery in Pleinpal.
