History

The city was founded on September 9, 1886 by the governor of Santa Fe according to the plan for the colonization of the territory, adopted by the provincial government. As for the name of the city, that is, two versions, one of them indicates the existence of a fort in its vicinity, whose heavenly patron was St. Francis of Assisi. According to another version, the most likely, the founder named the city in honor of the heavenly patron of his brother, whose name was Francisco and who died on April 14, 1878.

The current location of San Francisco is located a little south of the original settlement and dates from 1888. This movement was due to the fact that at the same time the railway lines of the were laid here, and the residents moved their houses closer to the station. The settlement was officially declared a city in 1915. Most of the population of San Francisco consists of immigrants and refugees from Europe, especially from the Piedmont region in Italy, during the First and Second World Wars.

Until the 1940s, San Francisco had no water supply. In the 1950-1970s, the city from agricultural turned into an industrial center. A university was founded here. It was at this time that the highway 19 was laid through the city, connecting it with the capitals of the provinces of Cordoba and Santa Fe. The old railways of the Cordoba Central Railway were dismantled in the 1960s. At this place is now the modernized city center.
